Leica QNodules is a digital image analysis application that objectively measures and classifies graphite particles in polished cast iron specimens. Graphite particles in nodular and flake forms, can be correlated to the physical and wear properties of cast iron. Leica QNodules measures and classifies nodular graphite by size, form and distribution, according to a range of standard techniques.
Key Features
-
Performs automated graphite particle analysis, with continuous operator control.
-
Leica QNodules Wizards guide the user through the analysis process.
-
Conformity to extensive range of industry standards.
-
Operates within the Leica Q550 MW Materials Workstation Application Environment, Microsoft Windows environment.
Comprehensive selection of standards
Leica QNodules offers a comprehensive selection of analysis techniques, all of which measure graphite particles in a polished sample on the basis of contrast, irrespective of the type of material concerned. By identifying the appropriate industry standard, the user can be confident that the analysis process conforms to their particular laboratory requirements. Industry Standards complied with: ASTM A247-67 (1990) JIS G 5502* ISO 945:1975
Methodology
Leica QNodules quickly and reproducibly identifies, measures, and classifies the graphite microstructure. The area and shape (ie roundness) of each graphite particle in the field of view is measured and these values are then automatically compared to standard classes or to user defined thresholds in order to classify the size and form of the graphite.

Accurate, Automatic Analysis
Nodule results are accumulated over multiple fields of view to allow fast, accurate characterisation of many hundreds of nodules in the specimen. According to a range of published standards, QNodules continuously reports the 95% confidence interval and relative accuracy, assuring precise monitoring of the measurement procedure. Using optional motorisation of the microscope stage and focus, QNodules allows fully unattended quantification of the microstructure through automated specimen scanning.
Results Database for Convenience and User Configurable Report Formats
Following graphite measurement and classification, QNodules presents the results in both graphical and statistical formats, to suit user preferences. The full morphological analysis raw data is also displayed, giving each graphite particle's area, perimeter, shape factors, and location. With optional microscope stage automation, each particle may be automatically relocated for further review.
